This launch is occurring hopefully in the next 10 minutes.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/#

It is intended to be positioned at the Sun-Earth L1 Lagrangian point, 930,000 miles from Earth, to monitor variable solar wind condition, provide early warning of approaching coronal mass ejections and observe phenomena on Earth including changes in ozone, aerosols, dust and volcanic ash, cloud height, vegetation cover and climate.

This is pretty exciting.

A no go. Too windy. Rescheduled for tomorrow. Maybe the third time will be the charm. Re-landing the booster is what will be interesting. Musk already pancaked one in January when it ran out of hydraulic fluid. Oops!

I sure hope it goes well tomorrow. I was excited to watch it being streamed live. That re-landing the booster will also be interesting to see, I wonder if SpaceX will have a stream of that for when it happens.

To me what is exciting about SpaceX is that it is apparently a private endeavor. I certainly hope that the cursed Government is not involved.

Alleycat, on one hand I totally agree with you. However, there might be two sides to this coin. I personally believe space is crucial to the long term defense of this country. A few centuries ago it was the country that ruled the seas had dominance in the world. I fear that we are not that many years away from space being the next "seas".

While it should not be our intent to dominate the world, we certainly do not want a foreign power to dominate our children and grandchildren. I have a fear that Obama and the democrats have ceded our lead in space and therefore have opened the door to other world powers being dominant in the coming decades.

Elon's company has a government contract that they won.

There is no other country currently or in the next five years that has the technology we do to reach space with regularity.

Hardly. The Russians and Chinese are currently the only countries with manned flight capabilities. The US has none. European Space Agency regularly launches satellites into orbit. The ESA was responsible for the Rosetta Mission, the first soft landing on a comet.
