While Chicago politics aren't dominated as heavily by the Democrat Party Machine as in past years, the Democrats still rule/govern in Cook County with a strong hand. The patronage and spoils system, a hallmark of machine politics, is alive and well in the City of Big Shoulders. Since the Democrat Party is equated with liberalism/progressivism it is easy to point a finger at the Democrats since they have run the city since 1931 when "Big Bill" Thompson was the last Republican mayor. Of course, Bill wasn't known for his ethics either.
