This time people are protesting against memorials erected to Confederate soldiers. In fact, some have gone so far as to try to tear them down themselves, which is a criminal act that needs to be punished whether or not you agree with the people doing these things.

When asked why they want the statues and other Confederate memorials removed, these people give answers such as "they're symbols of racism" or "they teach our kids to hate". In my mind, neither of these responses are sufficient. If you honestly take a look at the history, you'll see and understand that the vast majority of the Confederate soldiers never owned even one slave and that slavery made their lives more difficult because their small farms couldn't compete with the large plantations operated with slave labor. These men were simply tired of the federal government telling them how to run their lives. Their motivation was states rights, not slavery. They saw themselves in the same light as the patriots who fought the Revolutionary War against England.

Now stop and think where all of the started. You may disagree; however, as I see it, it began with the demands for the Ten Commandments, crosses, and other religious symbols to be removed from public property. Since that battle is succeeding, a lot of people have decided to move on to other things. It didn't move directly to Confederate war memorials. Look at all of the news stories about schools at all levels that no longer display the American flag because people decided that national symbol is offensive. There are people who equate the "Stars and Stripes" with the "Stars and Bars" as a symbol of racism and oppression. Once these people taste a little success, they take the war to the next thing they don't like or can't appreciate.

What's next? Once the Confederate memorials start coming down, what offensive object will be the next objective? I can think of some that people out there might find offensive.
1. Memorials to soldiers and sailors in any war could be deemed symbols of American oppression and imperialism.
2. Memorials to the men and women (especially the military) who defended themselves against Native American attacks could be deemed memorials to Native American genocide.
3. Memorials to everyone who suffered during the Holocaust could be deemed religious in nature and not appropriate for government protection.

But what will these same people say when it's memorials to their causes that become the target? Will they demand the protestors be more tolerant of other people's ideas and beliefs? Most likely. Will they label the protestors as racist? Most probably. Will they demand that the people causing damage to the memorials be arrested and charged with vandalism? Absolutely. Here are a few examples of memorials the same people complaining today would turn around and staunchly defend tomorrow:
1. Memorials to highly esteemed members of the feminist movement because men are being stripped of their rights.
2. Memorials to abortion clinic workers who have been killed in clinic bombings because there are people who view abortion as murder.
3. Memorials to the Black Power movement because it promoted violence.
4. Memorials to Native Americans who attacked white settlers in unprovoked attacks.

I'm not saying I advocate any of the above. History is history and we can learn something from the good and the bad. The memorials as memorials don't advocate racism or teach hatred. These two things come from the heart of the person viewing the memorial and what they say or do in response that influences the people around them. It's a parents responsibility to teach their children how to respond to what they see, hear, and read. Yes, racism and other forms of hatred do exist and we need to work at eliminating those things, but removing memorials isn't the answer. In fact, in my opinion, doing so only makes the tension and reactions worse. What we're going to see in the future - what we're already seeing now - is violence caused by one side or the other feeling as if their rights are being trampled. IS this what America is really about?

since they are on a kick of wanting to erase the history of the United States, especially when it involves real or alleged mistreatment of minorities?

Will they allow the Statue remain that is a monument to the Buffalo Soldiers.  It was an outfit comprised solely of black men.
