California teacher put on leave for asking if schools would allow walkouts to protest abortion
By Katelyn Caralle | Washington Examiner

California high school history teacher Julianne Benzel was put on paid leave after questioning in front of her students whether school administrations would let a group of students protesting abortion walk out of class in the middle of the school day like they did with students who did so on Wednesday in protests over school shootings.

“I opened up the discussion for if schools … are going to allow one group of students to get up during class and walk out to protest on one issue, would they still give the same courtesy to another group of students who wanted to get up and walk out in protest. And I used the example of abortion,” Rocklin High School teacher Benzel said on Fox News Friday morning.

Benzel said two students and one parent took issue with her comment and complained to the administration who then placed her on leave for two days.

The California teacher said she was trying to a start a class discussion ahead of National Walkout Day on whether the situation would be treated the same way if a school walkout was organized from the other side of the political aisle.

Ohio student suspended for staying in class during walkouts

HILLIARD, Ohio — An Ohio high school student says he tried to remain nonpolitical during school walkouts over gun violence and was suspended for a day because he stayed in a classroom instead of joining protests or the alternative, a study hall.

Hilliard senior Jacob Shoemaker says school isn't the place for politics, and he wasn't taking sides Wednesday.

The district says it's responsible for students' safety and they can't be unsupervised.

Jacob's citation for not following instructions was shared online by a friend, prompting a flood of messages to his father.

Scott Shoemaker says some people thought his son was suspended for walking out, and angry comments accumulated, including some that mistook Scott for the principal. He says he also got a couple death threats and had to consider switching phone numbers.

Student with ‘Trump’ flag assaulted by mob during National School Walkout

A student at a Minneapolis high school was assaulted by a mob of students after he carried a pro-Trump flag during the National School Walkout on Wednesday, police said.

The attack took place while students at Southwest High School were supposed to be observing a moment of silence to commemorate the 17 students and teachers who died in the Parkland, Fla. shooting last month, WCCO reported.

Police said the student was waving a flag in support of President Trump when he was ambushed by at least eight classmates. The mob forcefully took the “Trump” flag from the student, who suffered minor injuries, and damaged a camera he was carrying.

A school resource officer was able to stop the attack. There have been no arrests or disciplinary actions taken against any of the students involved as police continue to investigate what happened.

Minneapolis Public Schools officials told Fox News in a lengthy statement that, due to state law, they are “prohibited from sharing details of the brief fight that occurred on March 14 across the street and off school property.”

Last week, MPS Superintendent Ed Graff sent a letter to families about creating “a space for students” during the walkout, emphasizing they should not leave school property.

Graff wrote it’s “not possible” to “ensure student safety” if students “leave school grounds,” adding the school “will not discipline students for the act of protesting as long as the protest remains peaceful.”

Because the assault took place across the street from the school and technically off campus, it remains unclear what action the school will take, if any.

“MPS does not condone fighting or disrespectful behavior,” said MPS spokesman Dirk Tedmon. “When it happens, we follow the same behavior and safety guidelines for all students involved.”

Tedmon said students have a right to express their opinions – even when not everyone agrees with it.

“MPS’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths and helps students grow into well-rounded, global citizens,” he said. “It is important to maintain a safe, positive learning environment for each Minneapolis Public Schools student in every one the district’s schools, and we are committed to doing that.”

It appears that the school districts sanctioned and encouraged the walkouts. From one side of their collective faces comes the "we cannot allow students to be unsupervised" and "we aren't responsible for students once they leave the school grounds" talk tracks. I strongly urge that those who were opposed to the walkouts file suits claiming that their children were let unsupervised on school functions. One district did cite those who walked out. Why not all that walked out nationally? Perhaps withholding Federal funds for those who abetted and allowed walkouts. Those kids were not in class and that's what the districts get funds for, days in class.
