Not sure if this belongs here are in the politics thread since I have a gut feeling it will have a "feel good" political dictate.

The Fort Bragg Officer' Spouses' Club last week denied membership to a gay military spouse, sparking a firestorm of questions about how gay military spouses should be included in on-base activities, if at all.

The club, which is a private organization and not governed by the Defense Department, last week told Ashley Broadway, a gay spouse who married Lt. Col. Heather Mack in D.C. in November, that she is not permitted to join because she is not a DoD active-duty dependent ID card holder

This is a sticky wicket to be sure since IIRC the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and some military regulations, LGB families are not treated the same as the families of their straight counterparts, namely issuance of Identification cards and the services and benefits associated with such a card.

Also IIRC NC does not recognize same sex marriages but Ft Bragg is a federal installation and even though military installations usually follow the state laws not sure how it would play out if the Defense Department doesn't recognize same sex unions but the state does where that military installation is located.

The various private clubs, Non-Commissioned Officers Wives Club(NCOWC) and the club in question The Association of Bragg Officers' Spouses (ABOS), often referred to as Officers Wives Club(OWC) have no connection whatsoever with the military other than members being dependents residing with military members who are assigned to that particular base/post.

Other than gaining some notoriety in the public press, IMHO, the main goal is being made to procure a political mandate from the executive branch when there are bigger fish to be sought than being allowed into a private club, such as why is there no demanding Base Exchange, commissary, and medical benefits/privileges.
