Bill Maher is an idiot of the first order. Not only is he relatively wealthy he also sucks at the teat of government welfare. Maher became a minority owner in the Mets which means he owns at least one minority share worth $20M, possibly more. The Mets are now playing in posh Citi Field of which New York put up $614M of the $831 to build the stadium.

Through a complicated repayment scheme, the Mets will save $276M over 40 years and plus cost the denizens of NYC and the State $244M in property tax revenues.

The Mets will make annual payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT), that is used to pay debt service on the construction financing rather than flow into the city’s coffers in place of the foregone property tax. The City of New York Independent Budget Office estimated value of the exemption is based on a 2010 market value of $543 million ($444 million cost of construction plus $99 million land value). IBO estimates that this exemption generates savings to the Mets of $72 million (present value) over 40 years.

The IBO believes the bond financing, direct subsidies and exemptions for Citi Field will save the Mets $276 million and cost the city $155 million in forgone revenue and the state $89 million.
